There’s other stories underlying this main plot as well. The love they have for each other, even though they’re opposites, is poignant on the page, and the words resonate with emotion. I have sisters myself, and just reading about how they interacted, I felt like I could almost substitute myself and my own sisters in there.
The relationship between Blanca and Roja felt so real to me. But, knowing that the swans can only take one of them does bring some conflict into their midst. But the sisters love each other fiercely, and hope to somehow overcome the curse that the swans have given them. Roja, whose dark red hair looks drenched in blood, who’s sharp edges and determination. Blanca, who is light skinned and blond, who is graceful and beautiful. We have two sisters who are as different as they can be.
And while there is romance in Blanca & Roja, the main relationship is there in the title: sisterhood. There’s so much nuance and story with siblings, and most writers often prefer to focus on romantic relationships. This is a story about two sisters, and if you’ve read my other reviews, you’ll know that I love books about sibling relationships specifically. McLemore’s books are stories of the every day, of little moments between characters, but every single one of them holds so much meaning that they all stand out. It’s one I’m already familiar with, but every time I read it, I feel like I’m being blown away. The entire book is told in the quiet yet beautiful style that is McLemore’s writing. So, what did I think about Blanca & Roja? I’ve read one of their books before, When the Moon Was Ours, and I thought it was one of the most beautiful books I’ve ever read. It’s a fairy tale retelling, merging several fairy tales together, and also weaves together the Latinx themes and magical realism that McLemore is known for.
